Pedals del Priorat: the essential MTB route to discover the heart of Montsant and Priorat

Priorat , in the south of Catalonia, is a unique region, recognized worldwide for its landscape of hillside vineyards, its millennial history and its internationally renowned wines. Here, among charming villages, vineyards that stretch to the horizon and the imposing presence of the Serra de Montsant , Pedals del Priorat is born, a mountain bike experience that will connect you with the most authentic essence of the territory.

This circular mountain bike route covers 111 kilometers with a cumulative positive elevation gain of 3,421 meters . Its itinerary follows old paths and trails that were already used by the Carthusians of the Cartoixa d’Escaladei, crossing centuries-old vineyards, Mediterranean forests and Prioratian villages full of history.

With Pedals del Priorat you will enjoy a real cycling challenge: demanding climbs, technical descents and sections of track that will allow you to pedal through some of the most spectacular wine-growing landscapes in Catalonia . During the route you will discover the most emblematic areas of Priorat , recognized for its DOQ Priorat and DO Montsant , with unique wines and surprising biodiversity.

THE ITINERARY

2 stages

The starting point will be Cornudella de Montsant, a town in the north of the Priorat, surrounded by the Serra de Montsant on one side and the Gritella and Siurana on the other.

After receiving the briefing and the delivery of all the necessary material to undertake this fantastic route, you will begin the itinerary towards La Morera del Montsant, a town located right at the foot of Montsant where the views of the vertical walls of the massif are impressive, and later you will descend towards Vilella Baixa, also known as the New York of Priorat due to its dizzying buildings of considerable height.

After enjoying these views, you will continue towards Bellmunt del Priorat, with its historic mines, until you reach the capital, Falset (km 58.60). It will be at this point where there will be a stop and an inn to regain strength and resume the route between leafy forests and historic vineyards.

Little by little, between ascents and descents, you will cycle on technical trails through Gratallops, Torroja del Priorat, Vilella Alta, Escaladei (where we find the old and historic Cartoixa), Poboleda and finally, Cornudella de Montsant, where you will finish the route
